Penile Prosthesis – Helping to Restore His Vigor in Panama

One of the most frustrating and discouraging conditions for a man is to suffer from erectile dysfunction. Whether caused by injury, health problems such as diabetes or advancing age, men suffer not only the loss of physical intimacy but self-esteem as well. It is believed that 18% of the men in the United States suffer with erectile dysfunction. Prescription medicines such as Viagra or Cialis offer help to millions but some do not receive the desired benefits or their bodies cannot withstand the side-effects. For many men, the way to restore their vigor is a penile prosthesis and a journey to Panama is the way to end their erectile dysfunction problems.

The Procedure

There are two main types of penile prosthesis: semi-rigid and inflatable.

  • Semi-rigid – This method consists of two rods of silicone rubber that are placed inside the interior of the penis during an operation. Since it only provides limited rigidity, this method is for men who do not suffer from permanent erectile dysfunction. The semi-rigid method provides some rigidity as well as a certain amount of flexibility since the penis can either be pushed downwards when not engaging in sexual activity.
  • Inflatable – This method usually consists of two cylinders, a pump and a reservoir. The cylinders, which are placed inside the penis by the surgeon, are inflated with fluid when for an erection and deflated after intercourse. The surgeon places a small pump inside the scrotum, and it is pressed to create an erection as it sends fluid from the reservoir into the two cylinders so the penis will become erect. The main advantage of this method is that it looks more natural – despite the fact that you will have one or two small scars as opposed to the implants.

There are also a few disadvantages. For instance, the inflatable prosthesis is more expensive and is not likely to be covered by most insurance plans. Also, because of the electromechanical nature of this equipment, there is the possibility of component problems.

After your surgery

To minimize swelling, ice packs are applied to the penis for the first 24 hours following surgery. The incision sites are cleansed daily to prevent infection. Pain is likely to be mild to moderate and should be relieved by the prescription medications received from your surgeon. Sexual activity will not be permitted until after the incisions have completely healed. It is likely that after a day or two you will be able to enjoy some of the sights and attractions of Panama with very little discomfort.

Risks

The success rates of penile prosthesis are very high and the risks are relatively low; these risks include:

  • Uncontrolled bleeding after the surgery possibly leading to re-operation
  • Infection
  • Scar tissue formation
  • Permanent erectile dysfunction (inability to achieve erection if the prosthesis is removed)
  • Erosion (tissue around the implant may break down)
  • Mechanical failure
