Breast Augmentation
Also called breast enlarment, breast augmentation is a surgery designed to enlarge the breasts. Breast augmentation usually consists of insertion of a silicone bag either under the breast or under the breast and chest muscle and then filling the bag with saline. This prosthesis expands the breast area to give a fuller breast, a better contour, and give more cleavage. The experts at Hospital Punta Pacifica, Affiliated with Johns Hopkins Medicine International, can help you determine which method is best for you and help you achieve the look you desire.
Prior to Surgery
Any necessary precautions prior to surgery will be outlined for you in the treatment plan. If you require pre-op therapy, you will receive the proper instructions. If you are a smoker, you may be asked to stop for a time prior to your surgery. You might also be asked to refrain from using vitamin E (in large does), aspirin or anti-inflammatory medicines since they can lead to increased bleeding during surgery.
The Procedure
The method used to insert and position your implants during breast augmentation will depend on your anatomy and your surgeon's recommendation. The incision can be made either in the crease where the breast meets the chest, around the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), or in the armpit. In addition, a saline implant may be placed through an incision at the navel. Your surgeon will work to ensure that the method used will result in the least noticeable scars possible.
After Your Surgery
You will probably feel tired and sore for a few days following your surgery, but you will be able to resume some activities in 1 to 2 days. Any pain that you fell will be controlled by medication prescribed by your doctor.
Within several days, the gauze dressings will be removed and you may be given a surgical bra. You may experience a burning sensation in your nipples for about two weeks, but this will subside as bruising fades. Your stitches will be removed in a week to 10 days, but the swelling in your breasts may take up to five weeks to disappear.
Risks
Breast augmentation surgery is very common and has a low percentage of problems. Some of the risks that can occur with breast augmentation are:
- Capsular contracture (scar tissue around the implant)
- Excessive bleeding
- Infection around the implant
- Changes in nipple sensitivity
- Rupture of the implant
While there is always an element of risk, having an American-trained surgeon, a professional staff and a world-class hospital make your Panama brow lift at Hospital Punta Pacifica, Affiliated with Johns Hopkins Medicine International, a safe and rewarding procedure.
